Interview with Fabio Cheloni: Uncle Scrooge in Atlantis
For your new story «Paperone in Atlantis» («Uncle Scrooge in Atlantis»), you created both the script and the plan. What inspired you to make a story with Uncle Scrooge in Atlantis? It was Carl Barks' classic story. «The Secret of Atlantis»which inspired you or, perhaps, something else?
Hello! The only sure thing is that every story a creator makes is partly due to things he has seen or read before; it is inescapable. In my case, I was not influenced by any particular story, despite my love for Carl Barks. The beginning of this story descended into my head during a dive 25 years ago. I was swimming at the bottom of Apulia (Italian: Puglia) and, suddenly, «I saw» the beginning of the story. At first, it was not a story intended for Scrooge McDuck, but, rather, for an Old Fisher, who was at the heart of a storm —off the Heracles Columns— And wrecked. At this point, we saw in the reflection of his eyes the ruins of Atlantis. The whole story, completed after all these years as a Disney adventure, was born here.
...both stories aim to explore aspects of Scrooge that are rarely approached: fear, dreams, his memories, «pistachios» of.
How long did it take you to write the script and draw the story? From what we can see, drawing and coloring are quite special. Have you followed any specific approach? Did you discuss in advance with the colorer about this result?
About a year ago, but there were almost two, because I was working on other things at the same time, and I had a very demanding move.
From what we can see, drawing and coloring are quite special. Have you followed any specific approach? Did you discuss in advance with the colorer about this result?
The colors are from the brilliant Alessandra Amorotti. It was her first disco project in comic books, so she started with something no one would say was simple! We discussed in length and thought about the direction we would like to follow. I wanted the coloring to have a lot «feeling» and accompany the narrative and time sequence of the frame of history. Therefore, I personally supervised and conducted each of the stages of coloring, in collaboration with the Luca Merly.
The only other story you have written and planned is «Il destino di Paperone» («The Destiny of Uncle Scrooge»We look forward to it being published in our country. Is there any connection between these two stories?
I'd say there's nothing but my love for the protagonist. Nevertheless, both stories aim to explore aspects of Scrooge that are rarely approached: fear, dreams, memories, «pistachios» of. The thread that connects the two stories is adventure.
Could you tell us a little bit about the new story without revealing details about the plot? In any case, artistic attention and coloring are excellent!
Thank you! What I can say without revealing anything is really little. I can state that it is not a mere treasure hunt, but a journey, and, like all travels, it is not limited to the outside world alone. It's a «Accompanying» adventure, with many stories unfolding alongside and so many other events that have the potential to develop further. He speaks of myths, legends and, above all, of the treasure we carry in our hearts: Our dreams.
Do you have any final mention of your Greek fans?
I always miss Greece. I love the sea, the history, the food and its people. And, of course, her myths. After all, I owe a large part of this story to Greece, where Plato created it [en. the story/myth of Atlantis] and who stole my heart. It is another reason why I will always speak with gratitude for Greece.
